AI progress in 2025 📈
Given the pace of AI progress, it’s impossible to keep up with everything that’s going on. And honestly, the day-to-day changes aren’t as important as the longer-term trends.
Since I spend a lot of time reading about AI, I thought I would share my current thinking about AI progress and the most important developments:
- OpenAI and Google have emerged as the clear AI leaders. Google’s Gemini is potentially the best AI model at the moment, but it doesn’t get nearly as much attention as OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This is going to change as Gemini gets integrated into other products and services, and even the iPhone.
- There’s an ongoing debate on whether Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) has already arrived, will arrive by 2027 (assuming these requirements are met), or won’t arrive for 30 more years. Crucial to this debate is a disagreement on what AGI is and whether it even matters.
- AI is changing software development faster than any other field.
- AI is assisting doctors rather than replacing them.
- It’s clear that AI will lead to many more scientific discoveries and can come up with new solutions to complex problems, though it’s not at all clear which problems can be solved by AI.
- AI models are trained on human inputs, so it should come as no surprise that they act like humans, sometimes in concerning ways.
